Exchanges cleared to trade debt futures

US regulators yesterday outlined new rules to open up exchange-based trading of debt futures for the first time, paving the way for a challenge to banks' dominance of the booming credit derivatives market.

The announcement will intensify competition between the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, Eurex and other operators to be first to market with debt-based products and tap a credit derivatives market where the notional value of outstanding securities doubled last year to $17,300bn.
