To the extent that our educational system fails to teach youngsters how to do their own thinking, think for themselves, analyze, diagnose situations--it is itself a failure.

An old family friend who passed away last year left among his belongings a set of electronic trouble shooting manuals for old radios and other electronics. It was sort of a complete diagnostic system. The entire set filled two complete shelves. I looked at one last week as we were packing things up, and it was gibberish to me because I have no electronics training. I venture to say that given an interest to do so, I could have deciphered how to troubleshoot any given model of antique radio, merely by educating myself in the symbology and terminology. Probably much like your Chilton manuals helped you learn trouble shooting on automobiles.

You don't really realize the value of independent thinking until you encounter somebody with dogmatic thinking.
