The cheapest way and involving the least downside risk to your equity is to sell.

This is a new way to play:

money.cnn.com
"On Tuesday, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and Tradition Financial Services, together with Fiserv Case Shiller Weiss and Standard & Poor's, announced the launch of S&P CME Housing Futures and Options. ..."

I consider gold and selected gold stocks a very good long term investment with high short term volatility. If I were looking for reasonable safety and a solid prospects of appreciation in a gold stock today, I would look into KGI.TO. Other more speculative but "relatively safe" stocks I'd recommend are GUY.TO and secondarily FAN.TO.
