Now, I'm thinking that Milosevic was doing a reasonable thing trying to stop the Islamic Jihadists in Yugoslavia.
Sorry Maurice.. I can't accept that Serbian genocide of ANYONE, let alone Muslims, was a "reasonable thing" to do.
Milosevic was just as intransigent and corrupt and any of the Kosovar leadership. And as a result, the people on both sides were only provided more reasons to hate one another, than to find a healthy balance of power that would engender compromise.
It's a case of all of the children being intransigent, but the "parent" having the responsibility of having to punish the ones who are being particularly vicious in order to prevent familial fratricide.. After all, even though they were muslims, most were of the same ethnic heritage as the Serbs and Croats. The only difference was that their ancestors chose to integrate and cooperate with the Ottoman Turks during the period that they ruled the Balkans.
If the NUN had taken over Kuwait and Iraq, things would be off to a great start.
Non-starter, IMO.. While I see the value of the UN and the UN charter in managing acts of aggression by one state against another, I have NO DESIRE to see it become a world government to which we would have to subjugate our soveriegn rights as a free nation founded on the values of inalienable rights.
Because a considerable number of UN members are NOT democratic, yet are permitted to wield considerable power in the UN and UNSC. While understanding the pragmatic reasons that such nations as the USSR and Communist China were permitted to hold permanent veto power in the UNSC, let alone UN membership, on the basis of principle, this was a long-term mistake that diluted the power of the UN to advance the cause of democratic reform and promoting national governments that are legitimate representatives of the their respective peoples.
Why do we grant legitimacy to governments that are not elected by their people? And why do we permit such non-democratic regimes to participate in democratic international governmental organizations?
Isn't this kind of like letting the Crips and Bloods, or even the Mafia, to be legitimate candidates for local government?
It doesn't make any sense to me... Thus, there would be no chance that I would support a UN led world government unless, at a minimum, it upheld the same beliefs upon which this nation was founded.
