Program suppliers to merge customer units with DirecTV arm

A group of program suppliers to Skyport TV, an analog satellite broadcasting system, has agreed in principle to integrate their customer management centers with one at DirecTV, a digital satellite broadcaster, officials of the companies said. Skyport TV will terminate its broadcasting business on Sept. 30, 1998.

The 13 companies, including Japan Cable Television Ltd., will accept and administer subscriptions to DirecTV jointly with the broadcaster's own customer service unit, DirecTV Japan Inc.

The firms plan to sell programming to DirecTV, as they have to rival digital satellite broadcaster PerfecTV.

They also plan to provide Skyport subscribers with receivers for DirecTV broadcasts free of charge after they start supplying programs to the digital broadcaster.
