I disagree. I think paternalism can work in a country, I just don't think you can be paternal reaching across oceans to very different cultures. In your own culture a certain amount of paternalism assures a certain level of safety and cohesiveness - and I'm not a complete anarchist or libertarian, so in terms of physical needs, I'm ok with a certain level of paternalism in this country. I like to know that most people will be fed, and housed, despite their bad decisions. But I have no desire to export paternalism, because I don't want other countries exporting theirs to us. Some things, imo, may work in your own culture, but not cross culturally - and paternalism is (imo) one of those things.
