I'm thinking you read his story. This was very touching: When I went to the personnel people to be formally informed of my award, I was asked if I wanted the medal, and I was asked if I wanted it presented at Commander’s Call. I said no to both. In my mind, I didn’t think the Air Force appreciated what I had done. I was also firmly established in that mental space where I was putting Vietnam behind me. I didn’t want others to know. I didn’t want to think about it or deal with it. I was moving on.

By the time I was at the Wall this second time, I regretted that decision. I found that the souvenir stands sold replica medals, and that they had replicas of the Army Commendation Medal. I bought one and had the retired Army Captain who was one of the leaders of the weekend pin it on me. I suspect it may have looked silly to any passersby, but everyone in our group who was there and witnessed it knew how much it meant to me.
