We're definitely getting into the "agree to disagree" territory. But a point, nonetheless.
Hersh is the epitome of an older guy who had success and still thinks he's the cat's pajamas. He's good for circulation and a few partisan potshots, however, and I think this is the reason he still gets published. You'll note that his recent stuff, including the story about the US ferrying "thousands" of AQ fighters out of Afghanistan and into Pakistan, a story which if true would have led to a Pulitzer, has gotten exactly zero traction.
I gather you didn't read his articles on Abu Ghraib. Looks like traction to me. If it takes an older guy to uncover that, give me lots of older guys.
There's no doubt this story will have large, not small impacts. Many of which will not be visible. I read this article, in part, as the statement of those "high ranking military officers" who are considering resigning. If this has no impact on the discussions of using nuclear weapons in the Pentagon and the White House, we are likely to see a next step. Perhaps resignation; perhaps something else.
Bush has lost his credibility on these points. Most of the public will believe these stories, further damaging his credibility. Should they attack Iran without very significant support in American and world public opinion, a lot of things will get a lot worse. Quickly. |
