Very true. And the variations from state to state - or even more correctly - between different areas of the US and even within states are considerable.

The places I spend my time - mostly at the Coasts of CA, NE or FL, most likely are more liberal and relaxed than many inland locations.
Just my guess based on hearsay, because I have zilch experience with those places.

Generally even educated Europeans, who haven't spent much time in the US, are quite clueless about what really goes on here below the surface exposed to outsiders.
The differences may not be significant and they are in no way ugly - but they are there and important indeed.
But Gus IMO is pretty well read compared to most Europeans though - and in particular to those from the larger nations - and I would give him good credit for that at any time.
