OT My friend from Mexico calls her friends from and in Mexico "hispanics" rather than Mexicans. I don't think she finds the word "hispanics" offending at all - she and they prefer it. In fact, you're the first person I've ever seen that has indicated otherwise.

She prefers using the word hispanic over Mexican, because most Mexicans aren't very nationalistic about Mexico because of the horrible situation down there. Even my friend from Peru will use the term hispanic (rather than using the term Mexican) out of respect for what currently is preferred by folks.

Btw, the Spanish that everyone speaks is very different from country to country - hard for folks to understand each other even though we may think they all speak one "Spanish." Anyway, I wouldn't be so negative on the word "hispanic" as you are because it is a word that really carries a lot of respect.

I agree with you. My friends do too.

On a slightly related note, my friends from SA all say, they came to the USA to get away from crime in their country - and they are now very disapppointed the USA has allowed some nasty illegal immigrant criminal rings into the USA. They deport educated people that show up to the immigration office but they don't spend the time and money to capture the hardened rings that enter this country illegally and do bad things. This scares them more than it does me, because they say I don't understand how bad these criminals from their country are. They say the USA isn't sophisticated enough to handle these types of mafia-like criminals.
