There was a great Frontline on PBS last night that also showed how the more open society wasn't so open. It basically covered the tankman kid that stood in front of the column of tanks back in 1989 but also showed how the news was suppressed and how now less than 20 years later, even students at Bejing University didn't even know about it. pbs.org The largest shocker for me however was at the end when they covered how US corporations are helping China to not only limit access to information but also track those that seek it so they can be detained, arrested or worse. A google search here in the states or Europe about the incident turns up thousands of links about it yet a google search from China gets only 3 pages and they have nothing to do with it and are actually cooking recipes etc. CSCO was named as the worst and they show how the CSCO routers actually forward key word traffic to authorities providing what they are doing, their IP and physical address, identity etc. There was a US Senate hearing about it and YHOO, CSCO, GOOG response was they were just following the local laws. The Senator's response was that if this had been 50 years ago then they would have forwarded the where abouts of Anne Frank to the Nazis then? I invest in China but I have to say that my enthusiasm was jaded a bit from that show and that I will NEVER again own a share of CSCO. If anyone decides to watch the program online which will be available Friday, even if you don't want to watch the whole thing, I suggest skipping to the end to watch how they can snoop and track everything. I am not just thinking China here either. I can easily see how our "Global war on terrorism" with the erosion of constitutional protections could have the USA doing the same thing.... if they aren't already. Good Luck, Lee
