"Bad reputation from years of abuse?" You surely are not talking about Fidelity's annuities: namely the variable kind.

I agree that holders of annuities certainly are subject to their own indiscreet spending activities. However, in the case of either Fidelity or VanGuard their service of annuities is pretty much straight forward.

After self determined retirement annuitizing payments is another step open to judgement, but in the years prior to prescribed withdrawals it can provide a great platform for increasing asset wealth tax deferred.

Buying more annuity does not appeal to me since the rates of taxation will apply before or after and I'd rather look at other modes of investment. But we're all different. The sales force devoted to annuities has their own agenda.
