I think a number of things are coming to a head, which prompted the current furor over immigration:

1) War in Iraq/Iran going badly and escalating leading both to increased concern about domestic terrorism AND requiring a "smokescreen" for politicians, nearly all of whom endorsed the Iraq war at it's onset

2) Bush's talk of amnesty early last year caused a massive increase in illegal crossings

3) Concern about US job base becoming narrower and more service oriented. Real fear of what will happen to jobs when the bubble bursts. I for one am optimistic that all the mortgage brokers and realtors thrown out of work can get jobs picking lettuce......

4) Concern about deficits, and how the alien migration causes increased service utilization (ie, government expense) particularly in the border states.

5) It's an election year....
