Bob Dylan Plays the Rodeo Grounds

April 12, 2006

(Albuquerque, NM) Tingley Coliseum

It was okay.

I didn't get tingly but I DID get the T-shirt
that says Bob Dylan Motor Co. - that was the
highlight. There's a silkscreen of a dude
wearing a lether helmet and riding an old
motorcycle... reminiscent of "The Motorcycle
Diaries."

Now back to the bobster...

He played only keyboards, harmonica and vocals-through-nose.
His band consisted of four guitar players and a drummer.
They had a unique sound that if you liked it, you'd like it
but if you didn't you wouldn't. Together they produced the
perfect sound for a totally re-arranged "One Of Us Must Know
(Sooner or Later)". I loved it. That same sound was also
perfect for a highly stylized version of "Like A Rolling
Stone". I loved that too.

Other than those two gems, everything else sounded like
one of those hour long rock jams that the Grateful Dead
does on stage. That stuff doesn't grab me. The Dylan I
like is the "love songs and ballads Dylan". He didn't come
on this tour. Maybe it was time for him to rest or maybe
it's because he'd feel like he had to compete with the
opening act... the "love songs and ballads Merle". I DID
get tingly on a couple of tunes of Merle's but this isn't
about Merle.

I certainly wasn't disappointed at all...

Two great, new versions of a couple of my favorite
Dylan songs by my favorite singer of those songs,
two jumbo beers, some popcorn and pizza, a few tingles
from Merle and a T-shirt with an old motorcycle on it
is more than enough to make an old man smile and feel
grateful. Heck, you'da thought it was my Birthday.
