<China on the other hands, just dumps willy nilly into waterways, has awful air standards, uses up valuable agricultural land, and fails to enforce against even the most egregious cases. That's because cronies and fat cats make money under such a system.>

You actually had a chance to review their environmental standards? You examined their enforcement efforts and commitments? You researched and discovered that "fat cats" were to blame? You now have the knowledge to make an assessment of "the system" -- wow Russ, I thought you were just take a little drive around the block with your girlfriend with an "open mind" -- you really must have been busy. Do you have the slightest idea of what is actually going on? Or are you just so overwhelmed by the immensity of the challenge that you assume it is 'hopeless' due to 'fatcats' in a terrible 'system'. It is easier to fill in the gaps in your knowledge with your stereotypical assumptions than with any serious attempt to discover the underlying truth. Meanwhile, back in your clean little world, the 'fatcats' in the USA can damage the ecoshpere beyond repair, secure in the knowledge that they are breathing 'clean' air.
