Russ, I agree that China needs to urgently tackle its pollution problems. I am also convinced that most of the world needs to address this issue post haste. The U.S. is the leader of the countries that are resisting such action.

As to pictures, just look at these pictures from Minneapolis starting on page 18 through 22 in this document. They were taken at noon. They don't look any better than yours from China.
