The speech was mainly a rehash of what he writes in his newsletters and articles. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the opportunity to listen to and meet him. He is a bit of an awkward speaker (sorry George) but very good. At times you could almost see his mind running ahead of his mouth causing him to lose his place. He seems to be a very friendly and polite man who truly loves what he is doing. Of course, this is coming from somebody who thinks that Microcosm should be required reading in schools and that Gilder's insights on economics (on such things as trade deficits and tax rates) and capitalism make him one of the most important men of our time.

The one new insight that I picked up was his opinion that cable modems would serve about 20% of the market and that other technologies would fulfill the remaining bandwidth demands of the market. I remember he had called cable modems one of the most important new technologies so I was surprised to find that he thinks that they will serve such a relatively small percentage. The infrastructure is not there to serve more. This increases the importance of other technologies. He mentioned Qwest, CellularVision, and Winstar (among others) as companies that will help fill the bandwidth demands. His overall point is that the telecom market is exploding and the infrastructure will change completely in the next few years as new companies and technologies emerge.
