500-1000 tonnes of unaccounted for Chemical Weapons isn't worth mentioning?
The reason they don't mention it is because the obvious question to Bush is: What are you doing about it?
Indeed.. a good point..
IMO, the only way to defend this country is to "forward project" our forces to the enemies backyard, the places they feel safest in, and where they derive their support and leadership.
I'm not a big believer in creating a "Fortress: Amerika" attitude here.. We need to improve our homeland security posture, but it would just be clearly impossible to check all cargo containers, or arrest and detain every illegal entrant into this country... We just can't do it without planting landmines and electrified fences on our borders. The impact on our economy would be tremendous were we to enact major security policy revisions on everything entering this country.
It's not a comfortable thought (especially since I live in the DC area), but we'll probably be attacked again..
But here's a point of view you might want to think about. If you think we're living in fear, what's wrong with instilling a bit of fear on those who might think they can makes deals with Islamo-Fascists? If we have to be afraid of the people they have facilitated and supported, then maybe they should be made just as afraid of being willing to support their operations, right?
As for those missing Chemical weapons. The point was not that they existed, but that they existed under the control of Saddam's regime in defiance of over a dozen UNSC binding resolutions that demanded he destroy them all and provide accurate accountability for their disposition.
He no longer control over them. And if they were sent to Syria, no doubt the Syrian government took control of them, combined them with their own chemical weapons arsenal, and they won't fall into the hands of terrorists. After all, do you think they want people with Chemical Weapons running loose within their own country?? I don't think so...
So no.. I don't expect them to be used against the US and I'm not particularly worried about such a scenario.
