JF, "Convinced" or not, we have the most expensive health care system in the world with mediocre results. Single payer works better and is cheaper for many other developed countries. What specifically do you dispute?

a) The whole notion of "bang for the buck" when comparing across countries is bunk. Health care costs is on an exponential curve, so the more ailments we treat, the more per ailment we'll be paying. We can save a lot of money by cranking health care levels down a notch, eliminating a lot of overdiagnoses and "luxury health care," and accepting a slightly lower life expectancy, but who's going to support that?

b) Supporters of universal health care will always pick-n-choose their examples and ignore the problems. Look at Canada, for instance. Always lauded for cheap prescription drugs, but no one here (except those "right-wing extremists") talks about how it takes way too long to get elective surgery there. Plus doctors get screwed over so much that many of them choose to move to America if given the chance. I read about this one Canadian town that is doing everything they can to convince their local doctors to stay.

c) 11 million illegal immigrants already take advantage of public health services such as emergency rooms, community clinics, etc. Any universal health care program will have to pay for them as well, unless you want to start asking for proof of legal residence in hospitals. (Just Google Proposition 187 and see how successful THAT was here in California.)
