Maybe the only thing that saves the US is that the individual States still have some power they can exercise against the interference of the long arm of the Federal government (or in the case of MA, the long arm of the state).

This allows for people to be able to vote with their feet, which some are doing in large numbers out of states with paternalistic socialist policies to states where the attitude is that no one should be compelled to buy any product.

The problem is that the states are becoming increasingly polarised politically. Even within my own blue state, there is increasing polarization between the urban areas and the fast growing exurban areas. The attitude towards the government in my area is, "We don't need your stinking services". It took 10 years or so for the city to realize that the guy who always picked up the bill picked up and left but they are well aware of it now. Of course this didn't mean they changed their stupid policies, it just meant they tried to find some way to reach into the outlying region to extract their extortion. Marylanders voted in their first Republican governor in 60 years in response (against a Kennedy no less)so I have some small hope for the People's Republic of Maryland.
