Yes, it does. What if, as I already said, the instructor did not grow up here. Those folks often have no facility with the cultural iconography of the US. That still makes it a silly thing to do, but it would be devoid of any racist element.
There simply isn't enough data. But the nice thing (for me) is that whether they did this with intent (conscious or unconscious), or whether they did this out of ignorance for the cultural symbolism involved, a good dose of sensitivity training should shape them right up.
I'm surprised you don't see the leaping it takes to come to your conclusion. Our universities are full of foreign born instructors. Wonderful instructors, but not usually well versed in our history (since often they studied elsewhere, where the emphasis was on their own country's history).
So it's not that it couldn't be the way you obviously think it is, but there are other, equally plausible, explanations. |
