Checkwriting would be a defining move for Datek. All the other brokers implement checkwriting via a money market fund such as Alliance who basically outsource this function. But then all your cash has to be "swept" into the fund after the 3 day settlement period. This adds to the confusion. If Datek can't implement checkwriting directly without involving a money market fund, then I say forget it. Requesting a check or bank transfer is good enough. Brokerage accounts are for investments - not for paying bills.
