One would then be thinking very wrongly, IMHO, as one would be drawing conclusions that aren't at all supported by the evidence.

Aside from the fact that YOU often already do that, no, in fact you need to employ no such false "basic assumption" with anyone let alone me, and shouldn't. I often say I believe a thing, while in this case, I made no comment as to what I thought. You ought to be able to notice the difference, and think and write accordingly.
It probably is erroneous, and again, not knowing the calculations that led the author to write it, you should be admitting YOU erred in making the claim of a lie here, given what you know and don't know. I truly see a strong reactionary redneck streak in you, as illustrated by more than one point made in your posts on this matter.
By the by, it is a fact of life that error will be, and we'd better leave room for it in all things.
