Among the strange things to me, Dale, in this political moment, is the weak responses of the political apparatus at the White House. During the first term and early in the second, these kinds of crises were meat for them. As bad as the crises were and as obviously the result of their policy ineptitude, the political apparatus would swing into gear and the suckers would come up smelling like roses.

That's gone now. Perhaps Rove is completely focused on keeping himself out of Fitzgerald's hooks; perhaps the cumulative effect of all these is more than he can handle; perhaps they've all simply run out of gas. Whatever it is, the political folk are clearly now as inept as the policy folk.

We will, of course, get another chance to see if that's true during the runup to the 06 elections. But even if Rove gets in full gear for that, one would assume he's now looking for his next act. So it's less likely, for him, to be about congressional races, than connecting to the next GOP presidential candidate. Assuming he manages to avoid Fitzgerald.
