Wal-Mart Makes Changes to Employee Health Benefits Coverage

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's top retailer, said Monday it will implement a number of changes to the health benefits packages it offers employees.
The adjustments include reduced copayments for some generic drugs and health care coverage for children of part-time employees.

Susan Chambers, executive vice president of the company's people division, talked about the changes in a speech to the World Health Care Congress in Washington.

The new plan cuts copayments for generic drugs treating diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol and infections to $3 from $10.

Wal-Mart will also reduce the waiting period for health care eligibility with a special enrollment session in May, in addition to the usual session in October. The extra session will reduce the maximum waiting period for eligibility to one year, the company said.

Other points include offering discounts of about 20 percent on prescription drugs not covered under the plan; offering more workers a "Value Plan," which cuts employee copays in half to $11 per month; increasing the company's contribution to health savings accounts; and providing a 10 percent employee discount on health foods like fruits and vegetables.

Shares of Wal-Mart fell 3 cents to $45.74 in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
