Intel, Compaq To Unveil Network
Products In 90 Days

HILLSBORO, OREGON, U.S.A., 1997 SEP 19 (NB) --
REPEAT/By Jacqueline Emigh. Intel Corp. {NASDAQ:INTC}
and Compaq Computer Corp. {NYSE:CPQ} plan to issue
product announcements in the Fast Ethernet/Gigabit Ethernet
arena, related to a newly announced networking alliance
within the next 90 days, Newsbytes has learned.

In a conference call with Newsbytes, Kirk Roller, director of
the NIC (network interface card) business unit at Compaq,
said that the new networking deal between the two companies
contains joint development and marketing as well as
cross-licensing components. The companies will also
continue to cooperate on standards development, he noted.

Outside of networking acquisitions by both Intel and Compaq,
the two vendors have been "building up networking pretty
independently,"

maintained Greg Lang, business unit manager for Intel's
network products division, also during the call.

Over the past year or so, though, Intel and Compaq have
worked together in three standards groups -- NetPC, Wired
For Management, and Gigabit Ethernet -- as well as on the
recently announced Compaq PCI (peripheral component
interconnect) Hot Plug initiative, Newsbytes was told

Both companies also foresee strong migration of their
customer bases from Ethernet to Fast Ethernet next Year,
Roller said.

The two companies plan to work together to produce high
availability features for the server in Gigabit Ethernet, as well
as to develop port aggregation, for combining multiple Fast
Ethernet channels to dynamically increase bandwidth,
according to the two execs.

Compaq's acquisitions have included Thomas-Conrad;
NetWorth; Microcom; and Tandem; Roller noted.

Intel has purchased CASE Technologies, a Copenhagen,
Denmark-based

switching specialist, Lang pointed out. In addition, Intel has
made equity investments in both Nbase and Xircom.
