Just a quick story about the conscious I heard from a Dr Duffy a neurologist from NIH?NIMH? at the time.To have a true loss of consciousness(faint)you need bilateral brain involvement.There are some seizure pts who are not responsive to medications and they lose consciousness multiple times a week with resulting severe falls and injuriesIn these cases a surgical procedure of cutting the corpus callosum(fibers that communicate between the two brain hemispheres)is sometimes done to prevent the seizure from generalizing(crossing to the other hemisphere)and thus isolating the seizure to one side and maintaining consciousness and preventing falls.
A study was done with young men who had corpous callosotomies.An optical device was used so that a picture of a car entered the eyes but only went to the left brain.A picture of a naked woman was displayed so only the right brain could see it.Usually the CC would allow the images to be seen by the whole brain but not in this case.When asked what they saw the men would say "a car"and yet they would flush,their pulse would pick up,and they would loosen the top button of their shirt.When asked why they where acting this way the usuall answer was "doc its hot in here"The comment was made that that is the story of our lives:The left brain lies for our right brain
When I told this story to one student they said"your theory could be wrong some men do respond to cars that way"
