<Steve, I just received this today. I think this is coms' response
to Intel/compaq.wj... ...More details on this relationship will be provided in a
conference call on Tuesday, September 23, 1997.>

Thanks Walter. Any reason to suspect that this announcement will involve
ADSL?

And did anyone else see October issue of BYTES?

Acknowledging that the field is too immature and non-standardized to name
a BEST winner, they (based on NSTL results) did compare 9 different
manufacturers, including Orckit FastInternet, Aware ADSL-Link Ariel
Horozon, Paradyne Hotwire andPerformance Telecom Champion and
Westell FlexCap2 RADSL. (The Pairgain Megabit Modem they tested is
actually synchronous HDSL, so not appropriately comparable)

They used clean lines and opened 8 concurrent HTTP and FTP IP sessions,
and found that throughput claimed by each vendor was close to the results
that they actually received. A graph was presented representing claimed vs.
achieved throughput. I have eyeballed the chart to give the approximate data
in the form "achieved / % of claimed" in Mbps

Ariel: 7 / 71%
Aware: 7 / 85%
Orckit: 8.25 / 75%
Paradyne: 2.25 / 89%
Performance: 2.5 / 50%
Westell: 2.2 / 86%

Amati was not tested.

Fwiw (off till this eve)

Steve
