I have no problem using the term "illegal alien." But I might in the future if the term begins to connote a particular political stance concerning the ultimate resolution of the problem.

A term means what it means. It still means what it means even after it has been tainted by association with things it doesn't mean. We have to be able to talk about the illegal immigrant demographic. If we don't want to use that expression any longer, then we need a more palatable synonym. We can't just deny the demographic.

I saw a member of my county board make a fool of himself a while back on TV. I posted about it at the time and sent him an email. He was on a panel and refused to answer any questions related to illegal immigrants. Each question he was asked, he went off an a rant about how demeaning the expression was, refusing to acknowledge illegal immigrants as a distinct subset of immigrants. To him it was just plain "immigrants" or nothing. Like I said, he looked the fool. You don't want to go there.
