The problem is that terms become code words, and using them will be a clue on where you stand. In this unreflective day and age, it might be best to use code words despite an aversion to them in order to be simply and effectively understood.

The problem that bothers me, i.e., being tagged as a "round 'em up, send 'em back" type if I use "illegal alien" as a sobriquet or as a "give them citizenship now" type if I use the term "undocumented worker" is not yet on the linguistic horizon, so no problem.
