Oracle reviews 'selected opportunities' in open source -
By Michael Paige

LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Oracle Corp. President Charles Phillips on Tuesday said the company would continue to review "selected opportunities" for acquisitions in the open-source segment. "At the same time, we don't believe in paying ridiculous prices because, at the end of the day, you don't own the intellectual property," he quickly added during a conference call. "As our strategy evolves, we'll have more to say," Phillips said. The database and applications giant is "increasingly interested in open source as a way of reaching more customers," he said. In a recent published interview, Chief Executive Larry Ellison said the company was mulling distributing its own flavor of the open-source Linux operating system and had considered acquiring a Linux firm like Novell Inc.
