I've been telling people to do this for many years. I've always covered myself. Compensation is always up for negotiation unless the person is in a labor union. Having their own plan gets them away from the other problem, which is that their corporate policies aren't portable except for the small amount of time afforded them by COBRA. I can't tell you just how many people have told me they lost their jobs at age 50-55, at exactly the time when they will need that health insurance. It has cost me far less to insure myself and my husband in an independent plan than it would if that coverage had been provided by an employer and I get to pick the plan that suits my needs and means exactly.
