Methinks there's been some sort of sea change among the Republican Grand Poobahs and they aren't going to cater to "the base" on this one anymore.

Or maybe they're simply in the mode where they now care more about taking an opportunity to slam the Democrats than catering to their base. Sometimes you just gotta make the tough choices... <g>

That move by the Dems may have been too perfect a setup to let pass. Plus it has the added benefit of be beyond sleazy in its distortion of where the Dems stand. Blissfully sleazy.
