Iran controls access to the Gulf through the Straits of Hormuz.

IF Iran, or any other ME state, jams or bombs the Straits of Hormuz, how soon do you think we would/should take control of the situation ourselves....? Or would our Congress continue to dither? We already know the UN would and will always, dither.
