A man arrested by Maysville police officers has been named in a federal indictment.

William E. Anderson, 42, of Sand Gap was indicted April 12 in United States District Court Eastern District of Kentucky. He was indicted on charges of one count of falsely making counterfeit securities, two counts of passing counterfeit securities and conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute Oxycontin.

Anderson was arrested Feb. 27 during a drug and counterfeit money investigation conducted by the U.S. Secret Service, Maysville Police Department and the Buffalo Trace Gateway Area Narcotics Task Force. The arrest was made in the parking lot of Wal-Mart SuperCenter in Maysville.

Detective Ken Fuller of the Maysville Police Department said Anderson was in possession of more than $1,200 in counterfeit money at the time of his arrest.

Fuller said MPD has worked with the U.S. Secret Service on other counterfeit cases in the county. The Secret Service had investigated Anderson's home and found evidence of manufacturing counterfeit money, according to Fuller.

According to federal documents, an officer made arrangements with Anderson to trade narcotics for counterfeit money. Anderson was taken into custody when an undercover officer met with him to finalize the deal, police said.

Fuller said he hoped that federal indictments would deter other counterfeit activity in the area.

The day he was arrested, Anderson was in Maysville for an appearance in Mason District Court where he pleaded guilty to speeding and not having insurance. He was fined $500 for the insurance charge, $400 of which was probated two years.

Fuller said law enforcement officials knew through other investigations that Anderson had a scheduled court appearance that day, and officials said they also knew Anderson would be in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart SuperCenter on Kentucky 9.

Anderson had been held in the Mason County Detention Center on a $100,000 bond. However, April 18, federal officers transported Anderson from Mason County to a federal holding center in Boone County.
