You're number is way off unless you are limiting things to south TX, NM and AZ. Most cowboys were ordinary Americans who continued moving west. Their descendents still live in the same areas tho they may be miners or oil field workers now. It's not commonly known throughout middle America that most of the cowboys we have John Wayne visions over were actually Hispanic. I think, if I remember correctly, about two-thirds of the Good 'Ole Western cowboys were Hispanic. More and more I'm coming to the viewpoint that we should have smaller nations on earth, that the larger ones are gumming things up for all. Perhaps every country with 75 million or more in population should divide into two or three nations depending on the size of their respective populations. Europe (west of Russia) has always been divided into relatively small countries and they have a history of savage warfare. Germany since unification has 82M, Italy, France and the UK have about 60M ea. All the other countries are smaller. Yet this continent filled with little countries was producing mass graves as recently as the 1990's. Clearly just having countries with small populations is no panancea for anything.
