PortalPlayer Says PP5021 Follow-On Chip Not Chosen for Some of Apple's Flash-Based IPods

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- PortalPlayer Inc., a maker of chips for digital audio devices, on Thursday said its latest product has not been selected for use in some of Apple Computer Inc.'s flash-based iPods.
Shares of PortalPlayer plunged on the news, sliding $8.09, or 35.8 percent, to $14.50 during electronic premarket trading. The stock is below a prior 52-week low of $15.59 from last April.

The company said the follow-on to its PP5021 system-on-chip is expected to be available in the second half of 2006, but has not been chosen for Apple's mid- and high-range flash-based iPod media player.

However, PortalPlayer said it believes the PP5021 chip will continue to be used in other versions of the iPod.
