Intel continues to boost Malaysia investment

SINGAPORE — Intel Corp. has pledged to continue its investments in Malaysia even as its expands its presence in other Asian countries, sources said Thursday (April 20).

K.C. Yoon, Intel's Malaysia managing director for assembly and test, said the company would continue to allot approximately $100 million annually to design and development activities in Malaysia, including its Penang Design Center, the company's largest in the region.

Yoon said over the past four years Intel had added about 100 engineers to its Penang facility annually. Koon added that this trend was expected to continue, though growth at the center "will depend on Intel's business requirements."

The assembly and test in Malaysia of Intel products based on 45-nm technology is on track for 2007, Yoon added.

Intel currently employs more than 8,500 workers in Malaysia, where it maintains the Penang facility as well as a process packaging and mobile module center in Kulim and sales and marketing offices in Kuala Lumpur. In February the company announced plans to build a $300 million facility in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. In December, Intel announced it would invest $800 million over the next five years for R&D in India.
