SGI Opteron boxes to tip up soon

Not dead after all

By Charlie Demerjian: Thursday 20 April 2006, 15:39

WE HAVE LONG heard rumors of SGI AMD-based products surfacing, but every time we did, the oft-mentioned, red-throated reliable sources told us that the project had been canceled.
It looks like said sources are wrong, according to a release by Interactive Supercomputing found on Linux Electrons, there is a version of the Star-P compiler coming out for SGI Opteron boxes.

The due date is set for 'summer', a date that jives with the Opteron projects I was told about earlier. If those boxes are the same as we heard about, they are going to connect the Opterons to the interconnects through the FGPA, basically emulating the rest of the ecosystem.

We are also told there is a Woodcrest version in the works, emulating the FSB in the same way.

If this is true, consider it a very good thing for SGI, it could herald a new and very lucrative set of markets opening up for them. I guess we will have to wait a bit for the official word, but summer is just around the corner. µ
