UPDATE#6 - SEPT 19 - SUMMARY AND STATS

B Thomson continues to lead the way. We've had a BC and an ONT winner in Q1 and Q2. Is the crown coming home to Alberta for Q3?
Congrats to all of you Calgary entrants. If my memory serves me right I see you are well represented in the top 10. Your generousity in donating towards contest adminstration also leads the way so far. Thanks to all for continuing to make this contest so great. Remember to enter the Q4 contest on the new thread when you have your 5 stocks picked (i.e. wait until you are sure before posting).

Q3 contest stats to Sept. 19:
I've seen a lot of trash talkin lately but the great thing about this contest is that the numbers speak for themselves. BThomson still has over a $2800 lead on Cheeky and the others. Cheeky's portfolio will have to gain another 21% from current levels by the end of the month and BT stay the same or decline to catch him. Good luck and keep up the talk. It's very entertaining. I know I'd be buggin anyone who'd listen if my portfolio was doing that well.

Of the 359 stocks selected in Q3 contest the average return is -3.0% with a range of -80 to +135%.

Of the 135 entries, 40 are in the "black", 11 are over 20%, and 2 have all 5 stocks in positive figures (BThomson and Winer). Portfolio range is -43 to +66%. The median entry is b/w -7 and -8%.

Interesting stats:

The top 5 most popular stocks (KRY, PFG, MGR, JOT and SJD) have a combined portfolio averaging -23.2% with only JOT in the black (up 0.03 to 0.99 <g>). The top 13 most popular picks (i.e. all with 7 or more selections) average -23.5% with only MSR+25%, MIQ+12% and JOT+3% in the black.

Conclusion: DON'T FOLLOW THE CROWD - THE EXPERTS AREN'T

Which exchange should you have invested in for this quarter? Most of you will correctly guessed the TSE. Another answer would be it doesn't matter because you can make a million or lose your shirt on any exchange. All 4 Cdn exchanges have contest selected stocks which have gained and stocks which have LOST over 60%.

The interesting stat is the averge return by exchange for contest selected stocks:

TSE, 137 stocks selected, average GAIN of 9.5% (Hi +136%, Lo -76%)

VSE/ASE/MSE, 222 stocks, average LOSS of -10.6% (Hi 96%, Lo -80%)

Market stats for the quarter to date (i.e. Sept 19 vs June 30):

TSE has gained +8.5% to 6983
Oil & Gas Index has gained 12.2% to 7628
Gold Index has LOST -4.1% to 7968
Price of Gold has LOST -4.0% to 321

VSE has lost -6.4% to 810
ASE has gained 4.0% to 2465

At this rate the Oil & Gas Index might catch the Gold Index before year end.
