Rick, the war against Uday, Qusay and Saddam [and a few others in the Tikriti clan] was not part of either the WOT or the war against Islamic Jihad: <As long as the President continues to prosecute the WOT aka the war against Islam...>
The invasion of Iraq was a completely separate issue, albeit more related than the cold war against the USSR.
Nobody who had a clue thought that Saddam and Osama were in cahoots. Yes, they had a common enemy, the USA, but it takes more than a common enemy to make allies. Hyenas and lions have a common enemy in people, but you won't find them hanging out together making whoopee.
Iran and Iraq, despite having the same first three letters and the last, n and q, separated only by an o, and a p, and despite both being Moslem countries, and both having lots of oil, and despite being in the same part of the world, have had a MAJOR war lasting years and are from different sects of Islam which consider each other apostates. Osama's is another branch again and would like to own the oil of both, not to mention that of Saudi Arabia. And maybe he might yet do just that - he could be that long-awaited figure which is supposed to come to Moslems.
Islam is as united as Catholics and Protestants in Northern Ireland.
King George II should have remained focused on Osama's gang rather than shifting attention to Saddam, though I can understand the temptation since there weren't many other good targets once the Taleban and Osama had been dealt with, more or less and Americans were baying for blood in the wake of 911. Unfortunately, they are getting more blood than they wanted, for longer than they hoped.
