Some will change to bicycles. I think $3.00/gallon is an important threshold. It makes one rethink their finances. Perhaps finding a job closer to work makes sense when gasoline gets expensive? Riding a bike is a nice alternative to paying $150+ per week for the privlidge of driving to work.

Electric vehicles could be the real winners. Even before this recent runup in gasoline prices, EVs were far cheaper to operate than internal comustion engine powered cars. Now, they are even cheaper. Electricity is not rising as quickly as petroleum. All EVs need is a decent set of batteries and people will give them a closer look. Who wouldn't want to cut their commuting expense by 80%? That's real money when gasoline is around $3.00/gallon.
