I believe that the tiger would attack the top most partner first, which would allow the woman a chance to flee. If the man had time to flee before the tiger attacked, he would be pursued, and the woman left alone, because predators have the instinct to chase after prey, especially when they are two-legged and slow.

So perhaps the missionary position is yet another example of chivalry at its best.

...why men assume the top position. We evolved that way in order to rapidly escape an attack by a lion or tiger. It is purely survival of the fittest.
