Speaking of chemicals that may make people ill, had the opportunity to observe an Environmental Committee meeting here at my local state house. One of the Reps introduced a bill to remove the existing chemicals used as fire retardants manufacturers use in making our drapery, carpets, mattresses, most anything made of fabric that is a household item. Some molecules in this chemical (forget what it's called) allegedly free themselves from the fabric over time and float around your house, then when the molecule gets breathed in by a person, it becomes part of that person's permanent molecular makeup, it doesn't leave the body. The bill would have mandated that manufacturers remove that fire retardant and replace it with another safer one.

The Rep who introduced the bill made a fairly compelling argument, I know it had me thinking. Then this other Rep speaks up and says, [paraphrase] "OK, so these molecules let loose over time and become part of our physiology. But how do we know any harm is being done? Where are the studies?"

I don't know how this bill is progressing, but I am curious about that chemical...
