I think that the way to go for cars is to change steel for carbon fiber for all body parts. This would reduce the body weight to a half, reduce consumption, it would be stronger and would last forever if you don't crash it (zero corrosion).

It would be more expensive but it would have a longer useful life. So by extending the financing period you could end up paying the same monthly rate.

Caveat: Car manufacturers don't like cars that last forever.
