Not at the time. Survivalists and Soldier of Fortune Magazine were still popular.

And tech did save, if not the world, then the US economy. It allowed for middle management to be decimated and that allowed for the productivity gains that took the Dow from around 1000 to nearly 12000. It also was the second phase of the hammer lock on the middle class. It totally killed the idea of joining a company and working your way up the ranks until retirement. Companies showed that they would only keep people as long as they paid their way. Soon as that stopped they'd pink slip them. These same companies went into total shock during the 1990s when employees showed they were willing to skip as soon as a better offer turned up. "What ever happened to old fashioned company loyalty" they wondered. Totally missing that loyalties go both ways and as soon as one side trash cans it, the other side doesn't feel obligated any more...
