Yes, Mephisto, Fellowes should impale himself on his own flagstaff!!! However, the Queen chooses her courtiers, and is ultimately responsible for her own actions. She was very threatened by Diana's challenge to the monarchy, seeing her as setting up an alternative, more interesting and well-publicized Court, funded by her huge divorce settlement, where Diana, the future king's mother, would cavort with men of color and tarnish forever the House of Windsor. Don't forget that the English royals are very racist as a family--the Duke of Windsor helped the Nazis in World War II--and anti-gay as well. Prince Phillip was pretty much silenced after many public gaffes where he insulted entire races of people in one sentence!! Diana was simply much too open-minded, tolerant, outspoken and color-blind to ever be anything other than a nightmare to the Queen.
I saw a photograph today of Prince Charles, and he looks years older than he did a few weeks ago, haggarda and grey. It is reported that he had standing-up shouting rows with the the Queen and her staff because of their callous reaction to her death--the Queen not even wanting Diana's name mentioned publically, let alone a public funeral--and it is to his credit that he is remorseful and supportive and protective of his sons. |
