I think what you posted is on the mark.

Part of my job used to forecasting springtime
temperatures for a couple dozen orchards in
the Wenatchee and Okanogan valley. It is
done by a private company now--although
last time I checked they were still
retired weather service guys.

You can imagine what a nice job it is to
drive through apple and pear blossoms,
delivering thermograph paper, heh. Doesn't
pay too well, a hobby for those fellows.
