Re: You already know what the price of Conroe will be at retail at launch and what the price of an FX-60 will be in three or four months? Do AMD and Intel already know their price schedules that far out? I thought they adapt them to market circumstances, like the recent more than average cuts.

The Conroe prices are already known and have been published numerous places. I assume Intel will honor those prices, but circumstances could always change. The April 23 Pentium D price cuts were an eye opener to some when they were first published over two months ago, and Intel followed through. How well Intel will be able to meet demand is another matter.

No doubt AMD prices will have to fall in response. I included the prices as an illustration of how far AMD's prices may have to fall to be competitive. Even if Conroe ends up only one speed grade above AMD on average AMD's fastest 2.6GHz Athlon 64 X2 processor would still be competing against a $315 2.4GHz Conroe. Right now the Athlon X2 prices start at $300 with the X2 3800+ and go to $600+ with the X2 4800+.
