It's MUCH safer than it looks. When I moved to CA from Texas (where lanesplitting is illegal), I thought those guys were suicidally insane. Caught in a 20 mile long traffic jam, I decided to give it a try. I NEVER looked back.

Bullet bikes like my old Honda VFR are much better than your wide-assed Harleys for this, as they are made narrow and can out accellerate anything except a faster bullet bike. If you're alert, you'll always be 20 yards ahead of any potential trouble.

Lane splitting is still dangerous.....although I always envied those guys at rush hour. You ever see a CHIP slow traffic by weaving back and forth? The first time I saw it I thought.....damn, even the highway patrol are losing it.....that's how crazy CA seemed to me when I first got there.
